Q.The Indian Sugar Mills Association reported that, 'Sugar production during the first fortnight of December 2001 was about 3,87,000 tonnes, as against 3,78,000 tonnes during the same fortnight last year (2000). The off-take of sugar from factories during the first fortnight of December 2001 was 2,83,000 tonnes for internal consumption and 41,000 tonnes for exports as against 1,54,000 tonnes for internal consumption and nil for exports during the same fortnight last season.'

(i) Present the data in tabular form.
(ii) Suppose you were to present these data in diagrammatic form which of the diagrams would you use and why?

Present the Indian Sugar Mills data in a three-row table (production, internal consumption, exports) across Dec 2001 vs Dec 2000, then show it as a multiple (double) bar diagram — the diagram best suited for comparing several items across two years.

(i) Tabular presentation

Sugar production and off-take during the first fortnight of December (figures in tonnes)

ParticularsDec 2001Dec 2000
Sugar production3,87,0003,78,000
Off-take — internal consumption2,83,0001,54,000
Off-take — exports41,000Nil

(ii) Which diagram, and why

Use a multiple (double) bar diagram.

  • The data has several items (production, internal consumption, exports), each measured for two time periods (2001 and 2000).
  • A multiple bar diagram places the two years' bars side by side for each item, allowing a direct visual comparison both between the two years and across the three items.
  • It uses the same unit (tonnes) for all bars, so the heights are directly comparable — ideal here.

(iii) The diagram

For each of the three particulars, draw two adjacent bars of equal width — one for 2001 and one for 2000 — with the height proportional to the tonnage in the table, using a common Y-scale (tonnes) and a legend distinguishing the two years:

  • Production: 2001 bar (3,87,000) marginally taller than 2000 (3,78,000).
  • Internal consumption: 2001 bar (2,83,000) nearly double the 2000 bar (1,54,000) — the most striking change. …
