Decimal-to-octal is the same repeated-division algorithm as decimal-to-binary, but dividing by 8; read the remainders bottom-up.

Why this works. Dividing by the target base peels off the number's lowest digit in that base as the remainder; repeating until the quotient is 0 yields all the digits, least-significant first.

Working for (122)10:

DivisionQuotientRemainder
122 / 8152
15 / 817
1 / 801

Reading the remainders bottom-up: 172.
