Diatoms' finely structured, indestructible silica shells give them their prized reputation, and diatomaceous earth is the vast deposit these shells form over time.

Diatoms are members of the Chrysophytes, found floating passively as plankton in both fresh and marine water, and most are photosynthetic. Their most distinctive feature is their cell wall, which forms two thin overlapping shells fitting together much like a soap box. These walls are embedded with silica, which makes them extremely durable — effectively indestructible under ordinary conditions.

Because the shells persist rather than decaying away, diatoms have left behind massive accumulations of cell wall deposits in their habitats across billions of years. This build-up is known as diatomaceous earth. Being gritty in texture, diatomaceous earth is put to practical use in polishing and in filtering oils and syrups. …
