Slime moulds are saprophytic protists — organisms that feed on dead and decaying organic matter. Under suitable conditions their many individual bodies aggregate into a structure called a plasmodium, which can spread over several feet. This plasmodium is a naked mass of cytoplasm containing many nuclei, engulfing organic material as it creeps forward over decaying twigs and leaves; it has no true wall around it at this feeding stage.
