The plasma membrane's core is a bilayer of phospholipids, with cholesterol, protein and carbohydrate also present.

The detailed structure of the plasma membrane became clear only after the electron microscope came into use, though earlier chemical studies, particularly on human red blood cells, had already suggested that the membrane was built mainly from lipids and proteins.

The principal lipid is phospholipid, and these molecules are arranged in a bilayer, meaning two layers stacked back to back. Each phospholipid molecule is oriented so that its polar head faces outward, towards the watery environment on either side, while its hydrophobic, non-polar tail points inward, away from water. This arrangement keeps the non-polar tails shielded from the aqueous surroundings on both sides of the membrane.
