China rose shows twisted aestivation — each petal's margin overlaps the next in one direction, like a twisted rope.

Aestivation is the arrangement of sepals or petals in a flower bud with respect to the other members of the same whorl. NCERT recognises four main types:

  • Valvate — margins just touch, no overlap (e.g. Calotropis corolla).
  • Twisted (contorted) — one margin of each member overlaps the next member's margin, in one consistent direction — classic example: China rose (also seen in cotton, lady's finger — all Malvaceae).
