1. Auxins (e.g. Indole-3-acetic acid, IAA):
- Promote cell elongation, especially in the shoot (responsible for phototropism/geotropism bending).
- Cause apical dominance (the growing shoot tip suppresses growth of lateral/axillary buds).
- Promote initiation of root formation (used commercially to root stem cuttings).
- Help prevent premature fruit/leaf abscission (fall) and can induce parthenocarpy (fruit development without fertilisation).
2. Gibberellins (e.g. GA3):
- Promote stem elongation, particularly internode elongation, producing the classic "bolting" effect in rosette plants.
- Stimulate seed germination and can break seed/bud dormancy.
- Can induce flowering in some long-day plants and induce parthenocarpic fruit development (e.g. seedless grapes).
- Increase fruit size in some crops.
3. Cytokinins (e.g. Kinetin, Zeatin):
- Promote cell division (cytokinesis), particularly in root and shoot meristems.
- Overcome apical dominance, promoting the growth of lateral/axillary buds. …
