Releasing energy across many small steps, instead of all at once, lets the cell capture much more of it as ATP rather than losing it as heat.

The complete combustion of glucose to CO2 and water releases a large amount of energy, but most of that energy, if released all at once, would simply be given out as heat — a form the cell has no direct way of harnessing for its work. This is the core reason respiration proceeds through so many distinct, enzyme-catalysed reactions instead of one single oxidation step.

The cell's strategy is to oxidise glucose not in one step but in several small steps, so that individual steps release just enough energy to be coupled usefully to ATP synthesis. Some steps directly transfer a phosphate group to ADP (substrate-level phosphorylation, as seen in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle), while others transfer hydrogen (and its electrons) to NAD+ or FAD+, forming NADH and FADH2 that later feed into the electron transport system to drive much larger-scale ATP synthesis. …
