Hess's law says total enthalpy change depends only on the initial and final states, not on the path taken — a direct consequence of enthalpy being a state function.

Enthalpy (H) is a state function, meaning its value depends only on the current state of the system (temperature, pressure, composition), not on how that state was reached. Hess's Law of Constant Heat Summation formalises this: if a reaction can be carried out either directly in one step, or indirectly through a sequence of two or more steps, the sum of the enthalpy changes of all the intermediate steps equals the enthalpy change of the direct single-step reaction, as long as the overall initial reactants and final products are identical in both routes.
