Use the quotient rule (uv)′=u′v−uv′v2\left(\dfrac{u}{v}\right)' = \dfrac{u'v - uv'}{v^2} with u=x+1u=x+1, v=x−1v=x-1.

Let u=x+1u = x+1 and v=x−1v = x-1, so u′=1u' = 1 and v′=1v' = 1.

By the quotient rule:

ddx(x+1x−1)=u′v−uv′v2=(1)(x−1)−(x+1)(1)(x−1)2\dfrac{d}{dx}\left(\dfrac{x+1}{x-1}\right) = \dfrac{u'v - uv'}{v^2} = \dfrac{(1)(x-1) - (x+1)(1)}{(x-1)^2}

Simplify the numerator:

(x−1)−(x+1)=x−1−x−1=−2(x-1) - (x+1) = x - 1 - x - 1 = -2 …
