The mean of the 20 observations is xˉ=10\bar{x}=10, so the mean deviation about the mean is 12420=6.2\dfrac{124}{20}=6.2.

The mean deviation about the mean tells you, on average, how far each observation lies from the arithmetic mean. We take absolute values so deviations above and below the mean don't cancel. This is a standard measure of dispersion in NCERT Class 11 Maths Statistics.

Step 1 — Find the mean.

The data set has n=20n=20 observations:

12, 3, 18, 17, 4, 9, 17, 19, 20, 15, 8, 17, 2, 3, 16, 11, 3, 1, 0, 512,\ 3,\ 18,\ 17,\ 4,\ 9,\ 17,\ 19,\ 20,\ 15,\ 8,\ 17,\ 2,\ 3,\ 16,\ 11,\ 3,\ 1,\ 0,\ 5

Their sum is 200200, so

xˉ=20020=10.\bar{x}=\frac{200}{20}=10.

Step 2 — Absolute deviations from the mean.
