Newton's second law states F→ = dp→/dt (net force = rate of change of momentum); for a body of constant mass, this simplifies to the familiar F→ = m a→.

Statement of Newton's second law: The rate of change of linear momentum of a body is directly proportional to the net external force applied on it, and the change in momentum takes place in the direction of the applied force.

Mathematically, if p→ = m v→ is the linear momentum of a body,

F→ ∝ dp→/dt ⟹ F→ = k (dp→/dt)

where k is a constant of proportionality. The unit of force (the newton) is DEFINED such that k = 1, giving:

F→ = dp→/dt

Derivation of F = ma: Expanding the momentum, p→ = m v→, and differentiating with respect to time using the product rule:

F→ = d(m v→)/dt = m (dv→/dt) + v→ (dm/dt)

For a body whose mass m does not change with time (dm/dt = 0), the second term vanishes:

F→ = m (dv→/dt) = m a→
