Newton's Second Law states F=maF = ma (or more generally, F=dp/dtF = dp/dt): the net force on a body equals the rate of change of its momentum.

Newton's Second Law of Motion states that the rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied net force, and takes place in the direction of the force:

F⃗=dp⃗dt\vec{F} = \dfrac{d\vec{p}}{dt}

For a body of constant mass mm, since p⃗=mv⃗\vec{p} = m\vec{v}, this reduces to the familiar form

F⃗=mdv⃗dt=ma⃗\vec{F} = m\dfrac{d\vec{v}}{dt} = m\vec{a}

i.e., net force equals mass times acceleration.

Two everyday examples of the Second Law:

  1. Pushing a loaded vs. an empty cart: to give the same acceleration, a heavier (loaded) cart needs a proportionally larger applied force than a lighter (empty) one, exactly as F=maF = ma predicts for the same aa but different mm. …
