The Internet

The Internet is not just a collection of computers. It is the global network of computing devices — desktops, laptops, servers, tablets, mobile phones, and handheld devices — along with peripheral devices like printers and scanners. It also includes networking devices such as routers, switches, and gateways that make communication possible.

Today, the Internet extends far beyond traditional computing. Smart electronic appliances — TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, fans, lights — can also communicate through the Internet. The list of such smart devices is always growing: drones, vehicles, door locks, security cameras, and more. The Internet itself is evolving every day.

How devices connect to the Internet

Computers connect to a modem either through a cable or wirelessly (Wi-Fi). That modem — wired or wireless — is connected to a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) . The ISP then connects to a national network. Many ISPs join together to form a regional network, and regional networks connect to form a national network. These country-wide networks together form the Internet backbone.
