Lambda phage beats M13 as a cloning vector mainly due to its greater cloning capacity and its much higher, natural-infection-based transformation efficiency.

Reason 1 - Larger cloning capacity: The lambda (λ) bacteriophage genome can accommodate substantially larger foreign DNA inserts (its non-essential middle region can be replaced with the DNA of interest, allowing several kilobases to be cloned) because its double-stranded genome is packaged into a rigid protein head with a defined but sizeable capacity. M13, being a filamentous single-stranded DNA phage with a genome that must fit within a slender protein coat, has a much more limited and size-restricted insert capacity, and inserting large fragments destabilises the phage particle.
