Pathogen: Clostridium tetani, an anaerobic, spore-forming, Gram-positive bacterium found in soil; spores can enter the body through deep wounds/cuts contaminated with soil or rusty objects.
Symptom: The bacterium produces a potent neurotoxin (tetanospasmin) that acts on the nervous system, causing sustained muscle contraction/rigidity — classically starting with stiffness of the jaw muscles (lockjaw/trismus), which can progress to painful spasms of other muscles including those needed for breathing.
