The placenta is the structure connecting the embryo to the mother's uterine wall; without it, the embryo has no route for gas exchange, nutrition, or hormonal support, and pregnancy cannot continue.

After implantation, finger-like projections called chorionic villi develop on the embryonic (trophoblast) side and interdigitate with maternal endometrial tissue to form the placenta, connected to the embryo through the umbilical cord. The placenta performs several vital roles:

  1. It allows supply of oxygen and nutrients to the embryo, and removal of carbon dioxide and excretory/waste materials produced by the embryo, by facilitating diffusion between maternal and foetal blood (without the two actually mixing).
  2. It acts as an endocrine organ, producing hormones essential for maintaining pregnancy - human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), human Placental Lactogen (hPL), estrogens, progestogens, and relaxin (later in pregnancy). …
