Q.What would happen if oxygen availability to activated sludge flocs is reduced?

(a) It will slow down the rate of degradation of organic matter
(b) The center of flocs will become anoxic, which would cause death of bacteria and eventually breakage of flocs.
(c) Flocs would increase in size as anaerobic bacteria would grow around flocs.
(d) Protozoa would grow in large numbers.

Reduced oxygen availability to activated sludge flocs leads to anoxic conditions, causing aerobic bacteria to die, which in turn breaks down the flocs and severely impairs organic matter degradation.

Wastewater treatment, particularly the secondary biological treatment stage, relies heavily on the activity of aerobic microbes. These microbes are cultivated in large aeration tanks where air is continuously pumped in and the wastewater is agitated. This environment promotes the vigorous growth of beneficial aerobic bacteria and fungi, which aggregate to form structures called 'flocs'. These flocs are essentially masses of bacteria associated with fungal filaments, forming a mesh-like network.

The primary function of these activated sludge flocs is to consume the organic matter present in the wastewater. This biological degradation process significantly reduces the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of the effluent, making it less polluting. For this process to occur efficiently, the microbes within the flocs require a constant supply of oxygen, as they are predominantly aerobic organisms.

Note

The term 'activated sludge' refers to the biologically active sediment rich in aerobic microbes that is recycled back into the aeration tank to seed the incoming wastewater.

Now, consider what happens if the oxygen availability to these crucial activated sludge flocs is reduced:

  • Impaired Aerobic Respiration: Aerobic bacteria depend on oxygen for their metabolic processes, particularly for respiration to break down organic compounds and derive energy. If oxygen levels drop, their metabolic activity slows down drastically.
  • Reduced Degradation Rate: With slowed metabolic activity, the rate at which these microbes can consume and degrade the organic matter in the wastewater will decrease significantly. This means the BOD reduction will be less efficient, and the treated effluent will still contain high levels of pollutants.
  • Anoxic Conditions within Flocs: Flocs are three-dimensional structures. Even under normal aeration, oxygen has to diffuse into their core. If the overall oxygen availability in the aeration tank is reduced, the oxygen penetration into the center of the flocs becomes even more limited. This creates anoxic (low oxygen) or even anaerobic (no oxygen) conditions within the core of the flocs.
  • Death of Aerobic Bacteria: The aerobic bacteria, which form the bulk of the flocs, cannot survive or function effectively under anoxic conditions. Prolonged oxygen deprivation will lead to their death.
  • Breakage of Flocs: The structural integrity of activated sludge flocs is maintained by the living bacteria and the extracellular polymeric substances they produce. When the bacteria within the flocs die, these structures lose their cohesion and begin to break apart. This disintegration of flocs is a critical problem in wastewater treatment, as it leads to poor settling of the sludge in the subsequent sedimentation tank, resulting in turbid effluent and operational difficulties.
Important

The activated sludge process is fundamentally an aerobic biological treatment. Any condition that compromises oxygen supply directly threatens the viability and function of the aerobic microbial community.

Let's evaluate the given options based on this understanding:

  • (A) It will slow down the rate of degradation of organic matter: This is a direct and immediate consequence of reduced oxygen. Aerobic bacteria cannot efficiently break down organic matter without sufficient oxygen. …
