Methanogens are anaerobic archaea that produce methane as a byproduct of their metabolism; they do not produce oxygen.

Methanogens are a fascinating group of microorganisms that belong to the domain Archaea. They are best known for their unique ability to produce methane gas (CH4) as a metabolic byproduct. This process, called methanogenesis, occurs in oxygen-free (anaerobic) environments such as swamps, marshes, and the guts of ruminant animals (like cows). In the NCERT textbook, methanogens are discussed under the kingdom Monera, as archaebacteria that thrive in anaerobic conditions and are described as 'methane-producing'.

Now, to answer the question: what do methanogens not produce? Let's look at each option.

Note

Methanogens are strict anaerobes — they cannot survive in the presence of oxygen, which is actively toxic to them. So producing oxygen would be a metabolic impossibility for these organisms.

Option (A) oxygen — Methanogens do not produce oxygen. Oxygen generation is a feature of photosynthetic organisms (like cyanobacteria or green plants), which use light-driven splitting of water. Methanogens are not photosynthetic at all, so this pathway simply does not exist in their biology.

Option (B) methane — This is the hallmark product of methanogens. They produce methane as the end-product of their energy metabolism, so they definitely produce it.

Option (C) hydrogen sulfide — This one needs care. H2S production is characteristic of a different anaerobic group, the sulfate-reducing bacteria, which use sulfate as a terminal electron acceptor. It is not part of the core methanogenesis pathway (CO2 + H2 -> CH4), so treating H2S as a routine methanogen product overstates what these archaea actually do. …
