Transcription = synthesis of RNA from a DNA template; a transcription unit has a promoter, a structural gene and a terminator. (A schematic diagram must be drawn.)

Schematic structure transcription unit
Schematic structure transcription unit

Transcription: It is the process of copying genetic information from one strand of the DNA into RNA. Only a segment of DNA and only one of the two strands (the template strand, which runs 3' to 5') is copied. The base complementarity rule is followed, except that adenine of the template pairs with uracil (U) in the RNA instead of thymine.

Parts (name of the parts of a transcription unit of DNA): A transcription unit in DNA has three main regions:

  1. A Promoter - located towards the 5' end of the structural gene (upstream); it provides the binding site for RNA polymerase and defines the template strand and the start point of transcription.
  2. The Structural gene - the segment that is actually transcribed (between promoter and terminator). It has a template strand (3' -> 5') and a coding strand (5' -> 3').
  3. A Terminator - located towards the 3' end (downstream) of the coding strand; it defines the end (stop point) of transcription. …
