Unlike complete dominance, incomplete dominance produces a heterozygous phenotype intermediate between the two parental phenotypes, as seen in Mirabilis jalapa flower colour.

Incomplete dominance is a phenomenon in which the F1 hybrid (heterozygote) shows a phenotype that is intermediate between those of the two parents, because neither allele completely masks the expression of the other; both alleles influence the phenotype to some (partial) extent.

Example: In the four o'clock plant (Mirabilis jalapa), a cross between a homozygous red-flowered plant (RR) and a homozygous white-flowered plant (rr) produces F1 plants that are all pink-flowered (Rr) - an intermediate colour, rather than all red as expected under complete dominance.
