Pollination - the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma - can occur through different agents; wind and water are two important abiotic agents of pollination.

Pollination is defined as the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of the same flower (self-pollination) or of a different flower (cross-pollination), enabling fertilization.

Wind pollination (anemophily): here wind serves as the pollinating agent. Wind-pollinated flowers produce very large numbers of light, non-sticky pollen grains so that at least some reach the stigma of another flower carried by air currents; the flowers are often small, without conspicuous petals, with well-exposed stamens and large, feathery stigmas to trap airborne pollen. Example: maize, wheat, and most grasses.
