Meiotic division of the microspore mother cell inside the anther's microsporangium (microsporogenesis) produces pollen grains with a two-layered wall and two internal cells.

Inside each microsporangium (pollen sac) of the anther, diploid sporogenous cells differentiate into microspore mother cells (pollen mother cells, PMC). Each PMC undergoes meiosis to produce a group of four haploid microspores, arranged as a microspore tetrad -- this process of forming microspores from the PMC through meiosis is called microsporogenesis. The microspores then develop into pollen grains and are released as the tetrad separates. A mature pollen grain is generally spherical, with a two-layered wall: the hard, tough outer layer, the exine, made of sporopollenin (one of the most resistant organic materials, able to withstand high temperature, strong acids/alkali, and enzymes -- it even shows apertures called germ pores where sporopollenin is absent); and the thin inner layer, the intine, made of cellulose and pectin. At the time of shedding, the pollen grain's cytoplasm typically contains two cells: a larger vegetative ce …
