Q.Three reaction energy profiles (energy on the vertical axis versus reaction coordinate, each with a peak marked 'activated complex') are proposed. In profile

(a) the reactants sit at a certain energy, the curve rises to the peak and then falls to the products, which lie at a LOWER energy than the reactants. In profile
(b) the products lie at a HIGHER energy than the reactants. In profile
(c) the products lie at essentially the SAME energy as the reactants. Which profile(s) represent an exothermic reaction?
(i)
(a) only
(ii)
(b) only
(iii)
(c) only
(iv)
(a) and (b)

A reaction is exothermic when the products are at lower energy than the reactants (energy is released, ΔH<0\Delta H<0). Only profile (a) shows the products below the reactants; (b) has them higher (endothermic) and (c) has them at the same level.

Concept

The sign of the enthalpy change is read from the relative energy levels of reactants and products on the energy profile: products lower than reactants means exothermic; products higher means endothermic.

Applying it

  • (a): products below reactants ⇒\Rightarrow ΔH<0\Delta H<0 ⇒\Rightarrow exothermic. Correct. …
