Osmotic pressure (π) is the pressure needed to exactly prevent osmosis of pure solvent into a solution across a semipermeable membrane.

When a solution is separated from its pure solvent by a semipermeable membrane (a membrane that allows only solvent molecules to pass, not solute), solvent molecules spontaneously move into the solution (a process called osmosis), because the solution has a lower solvent chemical potential/lower effective concentration of solvent. If external pressure is applied on the solution side, the flow of solvent can be reduced and eventually stopped completely at a particular pressure.
