Reverse osmosis (RO) reverses the natural direction of osmotic solvent flow by applying an external pressure greater than the osmotic pressure on the concentrated-solution side, driving pure solvent through the membrane into the dilute side - used to desalinate seawater.

A labelled diagram of reverse osmosis would show, in place of a drawing:

  1. A rigid vessel divided into two compartments by a SEMIPERMEABLE MEMBRANE (e.g. cellulose acetate), which allows solvent (water) molecules to pass but blocks dissolved solute (salt ions).

  2. One compartment contains the CONCENTRATED SOLUTION (e.g. seawater/saline water); the other contains PURE SOLVENT (pure water).

  3. Normally (natural osmosis), solvent would flow spontaneously from the pure-water side INTO the concentrated-solution side, across the membrane, until osmotic equilibrium (this natural flow generates an osmotic pressure, pi).
