Diamagnetic substances develop a weak magnetisation opposite to an applied magnetic field and are repelled, however weakly, by magnets.

When certain substances are placed in an external magnetic field BB, the field induces a small magnetic moment in the material directed opposite to BB. Such substances are called diamagnetic substances.
