Beyond the critical angle, a ray travelling in a denser medium toward a rarer one is fully reflected back internally instead of refracting out - this is total internal reflection.

When light travels from an optically denser medium (higher refractive index) toward an optically rarer medium (lower refractive index), as the angle of incidence increases the refracted ray bends further away from the normal. At a particular angle of incidence, called the critical angle (theta_c, where sin(theta_c) = n_rarer/n_denser), the refracted ray grazes along the interface (angle of refraction = 90 degrees). For any angle of incidence greater than this critical angle, no refraction occurs at all - the entire incident light is reflected back into the denser medium, following the ordinary laws of reflection.
