Total internal reflection is complete reflection back into the denser medium when the angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle; diffraction is the bending of light around edges/apertures comparable to its wavelength.

a) Total internal reflection (TIR):

When light passes from an optically denser medium to a rarer medium, it bends away from the normal. If the angle of incidence is increased beyond a certain value called the critical angle (i_c), refraction stops and the entire light is reflected back into the denser medium. Conditions: (i) light must go from denser to rarer medium; (ii) angle of incidence must exceed the critical angle, sin(i_c) = 1/n.
