Magnifying power is the ratio of visual angles (image to object at near point); for the numerical, f = 15 cm.

  1. Magnifying power (angular magnification) of a microscope is defined as the ratio of the angle subtended at the eye by the final image formed by the instrument to the angle subtended at the (unaided) eye by the object when it is placed at the least distance of distinct vision (near point, D ≈ 25 cm).
  2. Numerical: object distance u = −20 cm. The image is real and 3 times magnified. For a real image formed by a convex lens the image is inverted, so magnification m = −3. Using m=vum = \dfrac{v}{u}: −3=v−20⇒v=−3×(−20)=+60 cm-3 = \frac{v}{-20} \quad\Rightarrow\quad v = -3\times(-20) = +60\ \text{cm} Apply the lens formula 1f=1v−1u\dfrac{1}{f} = \dfrac{1}{v} - \dfrac{1}{u}: …
