Intrinsic semiconductors are pure, undoped materials with equal electron and hole densities; extrinsic semiconductors are deliberately doped with impurities to enhance and control their conductivity.

Intrinsic semiconductor: A semiconductor in its pure form, without any impurity atoms added, is called an intrinsic semiconductor. At any temperature above absolute zero, thermal energy breaks some covalent bonds, creating equal numbers of free electrons (in the conduction band) and holes (in the valence band): ne=nh=nin_e=n_h=n_i. Conductivity is low and strongly temperature-dependent.

Example: pure silicon (Si) or pure germanium (Ge).

Extrinsic semiconductor: A semiconductor whose conductivity has been increased and controlled by intentionally adding a small, controlled quantity of impurity atoms — a process called doping. Two types:

  • n-type: doped with pentavalent impurity atoms (like phosphorus, arsenic) that contribute extra free electrons as majority charge carriers. …
