Q.A standard Young's two-slit arrangement has slits S1S_1 and S2S_2 illuminated by a monochromatic source SS. On the screen, PP is the central point of the resulting interference pattern and P1P_1, P2P_2 are the first minima lying symmetrically on either side of PP. A tiny hole is now made in the first screen exactly at the position of the minimum P2P_2. Immediately behind this hole a second two-slit arrangement, with slits S3S_3 and S4S_4, is set up, followed by a second screen. What is observed on the second screen?

(a) There would be no interference pattern on the second screen but it would be lighted.
(b) The second screen would be totally dark.
(c) There would be a single bright point on the second screen.
(d) There would be a regular two-slit pattern on the second screen.

The hole made at P2P_2 acts as a single fresh point source of light. This one source illuminates both slits S3S_3 and S4S_4 of the second arrangement, so the light reaching those two slits is mutually coherent. Two coherent slits produce a normal Young's fringe pattern, so the second screen shows a regular two-slit interference pattern.

Concept

Interference requires two mutually coherent secondary sources. In a Young's set-up this coherence is guaranteed by deriving both slits from a single source, so that any phase they have is fixed in time.

Why this works here

When a hole is opened at P2P_2, whatever light arrives there passes through and, by Huygens' principle, the hole behaves as a single secondary point source. This one source then falls on both S3S_3 and S4S_4.

  1. A single source lighting two slits makes S3S_3 and S4S_4 coherent, with a constant phase relationship.
  2. Two coherent slits placed before a screen give the standard cosine-squared fringe system. …
