Malus: I = I_0 cos^2(theta). Since fully polarised reflection occurs at 60 degrees, that is Brewster's angle, giving n = tan60 = sqrt(3) = 1.732 and refraction angle 30 degrees.

a) Malus's law:

When completely plane-polarised light of intensity I_0 falls on an analyser, the transmitted intensity is

I = I_0 cos^2(theta),

where theta is the angle between the plane of polarisation of the incident light and the transmission axis of the analyser.

b) Brewster's angle problem:

When reflected light is completely (plane) polarised, the angle of incidence equals Brewster's angle i_B. Here i_B = 60 degrees.

Brewster's law: n = tan(i_B) = tan(60 degrees) = sqrt(3) = 1.732.
