Even digits are {0,2,4,6,8}\{0,2,4,6,8\} (5 digits); fill the thousands place first (cannot be 00), then the rest, by the multiplication principle.

[!FORMULA]

Fundamental principle of counting: total ways =m1×m2×m3×m4= m_1\times m_2\times m_3\times m_4 across the four digit-positions; the leading (thousands) digit cannot be 00.

  1. Even digits available: {0,2,4,6,8}\{0,2,4,6,8\}, so n=5n=5.
  2. (i) Repetition not allowed:
    • Thousands place: cannot be 00 ⇒\Rightarrow 44 choices (2,4,6,82,4,6,8).
    • Hundreds place: any of the remaining 44 digits (now 00 allowed) ⇒\Rightarrow 44 choices.
    • Tens place: any of the remaining 33 digits ⇒\Rightarrow 33 choices.
    • Units place: any of the remaining 22 digits ⇒\Rightarrow 22 choices.
    • Total =4×4×3×2=96= 4\times4\times3\times2 = 96.
  3. (ii) Repetition allowed: …
