But it is held back by underdevelopment of infrastructure and marketing, lower initial yields, produce that looks less attractive and spoils faster, and limited off-season crop choice.
Benefits of organic farming
- Low-cost, locally available inputs — it substitutes costly chemical inputs with cheaper local, natural inputs, giving a good return on investment, which especially helps small and marginal farmers.
- Growing demand and premium price — there is an increasing demand for chemically-free (organic) products in India and abroad; such produce is healthier and more nutritious and fetches a higher price.
- Environment-friendly and sustainable — it uses no toxic chemicals, so it conserves soil, water and the environment and maintains ecological balance.
- Generates more employment — organic farming is more labour-intensive, so it provides more employment opportunities, which suits India's large workforce.
- Healthier food and inputs — it provides food and produce with a higher nutritional value and keeps farmers away from harmful chemicals.
Limitations of organic farming
- Inadequate infrastructure and awareness — organic farming is still in its infancy in India; awareness, appropriate infrastructure and a proper marketing system are lacking.
- Lower yields initially — its yields are less than those of modern chemical (Green Revolution) farming, especially in the early years, so it may not be able to meet the food demand of a large and growing population on a large scale. …
