Binary-to-decimal is positional expansion: multiply each bit by its power of 2 (from 2^0 at the right) and add.

Why this works. Binary is a base-2 positional system, so a bit's contribution is bit x 2^position. Only the 1-bits contribute.

Working for (1101)2:

BitPlace valueContribution
12^3 = 88
12^2 = 44
02^1 = 20
12^0 = 11
(1101)2 = 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = (13)10
