The PRICE steps — Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation — each limit swelling, pain and further tissue damage in the early management of a sprain or strain.

1. Protection (P) — What is done: shield the injured part from further stress or damage (support it, stop the activity, use a splint/support if needed). Why it helps: prevents the injury from worsening in the crucial early stage.

2. Rest (R) — What is done: stop using the injured part and avoid weight-bearing or movement for a suitable period. Why it helps: allows the damaged tissue to begin healing and avoids aggravating it.

3. Ice (I) — What is done: apply a cold pack (wrapped in cloth) to the injury for short periods. Why it helps: cold narrows blood vessels, reducing swelling, internal bleeding and pain.

4. Compression (C) — What is done: wrap a firm elastic bandage around the part (not too tight). Why it helps: limits the build-up of swelling and gives support; over-tight wrapping is avoided so circulation is not cut off. …
