Preserve Life Priority

When a player goes down on the field — winded, bleeding, or worse — the person who reaches them first has to make quick decisions in the middle of confusion and adrenaline. Physical Education studies First Aid precisely so that those decisions are not left to panic, and "Preserve Life" is the first and most important of First Aid's three guiding aims.

The 3 P's of First Aid

First Aid, as formally adopted in England in 1879 by St. John's Ambulance Association, is the treatment given to a casualty to preserve life, prevent the condition worsening, or promote recovery — before professional medical help arrives, or as complete care for a minor injury. Its aims are summarised as the 3 P's:

1. Preserve Life — the immediate, overriding priority. Nothing else is attended to before this.
2. Prevent Further Injury — stopping the situation from getting worse (moving a casualty away from further danger, immobilising an injury so it isn't aggravated).
3. Promote Recovery — supporting the casualty's return to health once the immediate danger has passed.
