Cytoskeleton

8.5.7

Cytoskeleton

The cytoskeleton is an extensive internal framework of protein filaments that runs throughout the cytoplasm, giving the cell an organised internal architecture.

What the cytoskeleton is

It is an elaborate network of filamentous, proteinaceous structures spread through the cytoplasm. This network is built from three kinds of protein elements:

  • Microtubules
  • Microfilaments
  • Intermediate filaments

Taken together, these interconnected filaments are collectively referred to as the cytoskeleton — in effect, the cell's own internal skeleton made of protein rather than bone.

Functions

The cytoskeleton is involved in several important roles within the cell:

  • Mechanical support — it provides an internal scaffold that holds cell components in place and gives the cell structural strength. …
