Interest on capital is always charged on the opening capital, not the closing balance. The closing capitals given already include the year's profit and are net of drawings, so we work backwards to recover the opening capitals and then apply 10%. Result: Mountain ₹37,000, Hill ₹26,500, Rock ₹16,000.

Why we work backwards

Interest on capital must be calculated on the capital a partner had at the beginning of the year. Here the question gives only the closing capitals (₹4,00,000; ₹3,00,000; ₹2,00,000). These are the balances after the year's profit was credited and drawings were debited — but before the omitted interest. With no additional capital introduced, the relationship is:

Opening Capital = Closing Capital − Share of Profit + Drawings

Working notes

1. Share of profit. The question states no profit-sharing ratio, so by the default rule of the Indian Partnership Act, 1932, the profit is shared equally. Total profit ₹1,50,000 ÷ 3 = ₹50,000 to each partner.

2. Opening capital of each partner.
