Q.Amit and Bhola are partners in a firm. They share profits in the ratio of 3:2. As per their partnership agreement, interest on drawings is to be charged @ 10% p.a. Their drawings during 2019 were Rs. 24,000 and Rs. 16,000, respectively. Calculate interest on drawings based on the assumption that the amounts were withdrawn evenly, thr oughout the year.

Concept First: Why Interest on Drawings is Calculated This Way
When a partner withdraws money from the firm during the year, the firm loses the use of that capital for the period the money is out. The partnership agreement therefore charges interest on drawings as a form of compensation to the firm. The key rule is: interest is charged only for the period the money was actually withdrawn from the business.
If drawings are made evenly throughout the year, the average period for which the money remains out is exactly half the year (6 months). This is because the first withdrawal stays out for nearly the full year, while the last withdrawal stays out for almost no time — the average works out to 6 months. The formula is:
Interest on Drawings = Total Drawings × Rate × (Average Period / 12)
For even monthly drawings, the average period is always 6 months (unless the problem specifies a different pattern, like the beginning or middle of each month). This is a standard shortcut in partnership accounting.
When the problem says "withdrawn evenly throughout the year," you can directly use 6 months as the average period. No need to calculate each month separately.
Solution: Step-by-Step Calculation
Working Note 1: Interest on Amit's Drawings
Amit's total drawings = ₹24,000
Rate = 10% p.a.
Average period = 6 months (since evenly withdrawn)
Interest = 24,000 × 10/100 × 6/12
= 24,000 × 0.10 × 0.5
= 24,000 × 0.05
= ₹1,200
Working Note 2: Interest on Bhola's Drawings
Bhola's total drawings = ₹16,000 …
