The textbook describes Low bone mineral density (previously termed osteoporosis) as a disease marked by increased bone fragility and disturbance in bone structure — including low BMD — that can result in fractures, pain, deformity and disability. It is generally caused by improper diet and amenorrhoea: low oestrogen and progesterone levels in female athletes make their bones weaker and cause them to lose minerals. Effects include a higher chance of injury, stress fractures, and early osteoporosis after menopause. Bone deposition increases through childhood and adolescence and peaks during the 20s and 30s, and BMD has a large genetic component, with heritability suggested to be 50-85%.
