Section 7.1 identifies three major physiological factors behind fitness.
The Skeletal Muscles Factor is about fibre composition: slow twitch (Type I) fibres are red, well supplied with blood and resistant to fatigue, suited to endurance; fast twitch (Type II) fibres are lighter, fire quickly and tire fast, suited to strength, power and speed. Most muscles are a mix, and the ratio - set by genetics, hormones and training - determines an athlete's natural strengths.
The Energy Production Factor is about which of the three energy systems dominates an activity: ATP-CP for very short, explosive efforts; anaerobic for efforts up to two minutes; aerobic for long-duration activity. This determines how long and how intensely a person can sustain an effort.
The Cardiorespiratory Factor covers how efficiently oxygen is delivered: pulmonary ventilation and respiration, VO2 max, blood pressure and volume, and oxygen diffusion all rise with exercise, and a better-trained cardiorespiratory system delivers oxygen faster and more efficiently. …
