These five abbreviations stand for key terms in health and disease — MALT (a type of immune tissue), CMI (a specific immune response), AIDS (the disease caused by HIV), NACO (India’s AIDS control body), and HIV (the virus that causes AIDS).

Let’s take them one by one, as the NCERT chapter on human health and disease introduces each in its proper context.

  1. MALT stands for Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue. This is a part of the body’s immune system found in the lining of the digestive, respiratory, and urogenital tracts. The NCERT explains that MALT constitutes about 50% of the lymphoid tissue in the human body — a striking fact that shows how much of our immune defence is stationed at the body’s inner surfaces, where pathogens first try to enter.
  2. CMI expands to Cell-Mediated Immunity. This is the arm of the immune response that does not involve antibodies but instead relies on T-lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) to directly attack infected or abnormal cells. The NCERT contrasts CMI with antibody-mediated (humoral) immunity, making clear that CMI is especially important against viruses, fungi, and intracellular bacteria — pathogens that hide inside our own cells.
  3. AIDS is the Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. The NCERT defines it as a syndrome caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The word “acquired” means it is not inherited — you catch it. “Immuno deficiency” points to the core problem: the immune system becomes weakened. “Syndrome” indicates a collection of many different symptoms and infections that appear together as the disease progresses.
    Note

The NCERT is careful to state that AIDS is not a single disease but a condition that makes the body vulnerable to many opportunistic infections — like tuberculosis, pneumonia, and certain cancers — that a healthy immune system would normally fight off. …
