Step 1 — Trading Account. The ₹15,000 cost of goods destroyed by fire is credited to the Trading Account, exactly like Closing Stock, so it is excluded from the cost of goods sold.

Dr. Trading Account for the year ended 31.03.2024₹Cr.₹
To Opening Stock20,000By Sales2,90,000
To Purchases1,80,000By Closing Stock35,000
To Wages10,000By Goods Lost by Fire (at cost)15,000
To Gross Profit c/d1,30,000
Total3,40,000Total3,40,000

Gross Profit = 2,90,000 + 35,000 + 15,000 − 20,000 − 1,80,000 − 10,000 = ₹1,30,000.

Step 2 — Determine the genuine loss. Cost of goods lost (₹15,000) − Claim admitted (₹10,000) = ₹5,000, the unrecoverable, genuine loss.

Step 3 — Profit and Loss Account:

Dr. Profit and Loss Account for the year ended 31.03.2024₹Cr.₹
To Salaries25,000By Gross Profit b/d1,30,000
To Loss of Goods by Fire (₹15,000 − ₹10,000)5,000
To Net Profit (to Capital A/c)1,00,000
Total1,30,000Total1,30,000

Net Profit = 1,30,000 − 25,000 − 5,000 = ₹1,00,000.
