Nature of the product: perishable goods (fresh produce, dairy) need to reach consumers quickly and so generally use short, direct, or one-level channels to avoid spoilage; bulky or fragile goods may also favour shorter channels to limit handling damage. In contrast, durable, standardised, low-value goods bought frequently by very large numbers of consumers (soap, stationery) are well suited to longer two- or three-level channels, which spread them widely through many retail outlets.
Size and geographical spread of the market: a manufacturer with a small number of customers concentrated in one area can reasonably use a direct or short channel. A manufacturer whose market is large and spread across many towns, districts, or the whole country generally needs a longer channel, bringing in wholesalers and sometimes agents, because building its own sales presence everywhere would be impractical.
Cost of the channel: every added middleman must be paid its own margin or commission, so a longer channel typically raises the final consumer price, while a direct channel keeps more margin with the manufacturer but requires it to bear the full cost of running its own sales network. Manufacturers weigh this trade-off for their specific product and market.
Degree of control desired: a manufacturer that cares strongly about brand image, technical explanation at the point of sale, or strict price control tends to prefer a direct or short channel, where it can supervise these details closely. A manufacturer more focused on maximum reach than on controlling every detail of the final sale is generally comfortable with a longer channel involving independent middlemen. …
