An MSME is a registered business enterprise — engaged in manufacturing or providing a service — that is classified as micro, small, or medium based on its investment in plant and machinery/equipment and its annual turnover, and it formally registers through Udyam Registration to obtain an Udyam Registration Certificate. Its purpose is to carry on a business activity for profit, and once registered, it can access bank finance and MSME-specific government support directly, in its own capacity as a business.
An SHG, by contrast, is not a business enterprise at all — it is a small, voluntary, and homogeneous group of individuals, typically 10 to 20 members from a similar socio-economic background, who come together to save regularly and lend small amounts to each other from their pooled fund. An SHG has no investment in plant and machinery and no turnover of its own in the business sense, and it does not register through Udyam Registration; its purpose is thrift, internal credit, and financial inclusion among its members, rather than carrying on a manufacturing or service activity for profit. An established SHG can access bank credit, but only as a group, and specifically through the SHG-Bank Linkage Programme facilitated by NABARD, rather than as an ordinary business borrower. …
