In the Tamil Nadu HSC Class-11 Commerce syllabus, reciprocal promises are promises which form the consideration for each other (Section 2(f) of the Indian Contract Act, 1872). They are classified by the order in which the parties must perform:
- Mutual and independent promises — each party must perform his own promise independently, without waiting for the other party to perform. Example: a buyer must pay on a fixed date and the seller must deliver on a fixed date, each irrespective of the other.
- Mutual and dependent promises — the performance of one party's promise depends on the prior performance of the other. If one party fails, the other need not perform. Example: a tailor need not stitch the cloth until the customer supplies the cloth. …
