HDI (UNDP) combines three indicators — life expectancy at birth (health), mean and expected years of schooling (education), and GNI per capita in PPP (standard of living) — into a single value between 0 and 1.

Meaning. The Human Development Index (HDI) was introduced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1990 to measure human well-being rather than income alone. It combines three dimensions, each with its indicator:

  1. A long and healthy life — measured by life expectancy at birth.
  2. Knowledge / Education — measured by mean years of schooling (of adults) and expected years of schooling (of children). (In the earlier version, adult literacy rate and gross enrolment ratio were used.)
  3. A decent standard of living — measured by Gross National Income (GNI) per capita in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) US dollars. (Earlier the measure was GDP per capita.) …
