Rural non-farm employment — encompassing rural industry (agro-processing, handloom, small-scale manufacturing), handicrafts, rural services (trade, transport, construction), and allied activities such as dairying, poultry, fisheries and forestry — supplements farm income, particularly during the agricultural off-season, and reduces the extent to which rural households depend entirely on land for their livelihood.
